Fire to ink Mexican legend, Blanco
Soccer Betting Lines
04/02/2007 - Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Major League Soccer can shortly boast a third star signed to the new designated player contract after Englishman David Beckham with Los Angeles and American Claudio Reyna with New York.
The Chicago Fire announced that Mexican legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco will sign a DP contract with MLS on Tuesday morning.
"He is going to have a profound impact on our attack," Chicago head coach Dave Sarachan said.
Blanco will join the Fire after his contract with Mexican First Division squad Club America expires on June 30. He will count $400,000 towards the Fire's league-paid salary cap with everything over that being paid for by the team and its investor-operator, AEG., which also owns the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo.
"There is, no doubt, a lot of excitement about this," Sarachan said. "There will be a real interest around the country and especially in the Chicago Area to watch him play. This is just part of us putting an exciting product out on the field."
Blanco began his career with the Aguilas in 1990 at age 17 and has also played for Necaxa and Veracruz in Mexico and Real Valladolid in Spain. Blanco's career for the Mexican National Team consisted of 95 appearances, 25 goals, and two World Cups including a tournament-record nine goals in Mexico's 1999 FIFA Confederation's Cup title run.
With the Blanco signing, MLS has three superstars in strategically placed points across the country - on the West Coast with Beckham, the East Coast with Reyna and now the Midwest with Blanco.
"It is a little ironic, but with the way it all shook out, three of the biggest markets went out and tried to make their clubs better (by filling DP slots)," Sarachan said. "We are very aggressive in making our product better. It took a lot of hard work to get it done but it happened and we are very excited about it.
"Generally with the start of the season approaching, we are pretty pumped to get 2007 underway," he added.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds
Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.
Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.
Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds
With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.
That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.
Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.
After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.
The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
